The henequen (sisal) haciendas in the state were a great economical boom for more than a century. That made it possible for Yucatán to produce 90% of hard fibers of the world at the beginning of the XX century. The majority of the haciendas were built in the XVI and the XX century. Now a day some of these have become museums, luxury hotels, restaurants and fiber producer for turism on this route you will visit the Haciendas Yaxcopoil and Ochil.
After visiting the haciendas, we will visit a natural wonder created by our calcareous soil that filters the rain water down to the subsoil, forming the most extensive under ground rivers in the world, and ending in the ocean. The calcareous soil is formed by reefs, by the gigantic aerolite BAPTISINA that created a crater in Chicxulub and ended with the dinosaurs and other species more than 60 million years ago and because of the consecutive glaciations. The flow of the rivers have createc big caves of which most of them have collapsed and have formed caves or holes called cenotes, exposing the water to surface for the good of ecosystem and the human consummation, and that was decisive for the Mayan growth. Today these cenotes offer a natural attractive sight and you could also enjoy a swim. We will be visiting three cenotes: Yax há, Xbatún y Dzom bakal.
Lunch will be at hacienda Ochil (beverages not included) the entrance to cenotes is included. Aditional rents snorkel and diving equipment.
