Journey
through the lake Atitlán, starting from Panajachel, the most
accessible town in the shores of the lake. Boat ride to the other
side of this marvelous lake, until reaching Santiago Atitlán
one of the oldest villages and former capital of the nowadays scarce
Tzutuhil Maya, which make one of the most beautiful handmade clothes
of the entire region. At Santiago Atitlán there will be the
opportunity to visit the brotherhood of Maximón, the only
venerated “Saint” which is a product of Mayan and Catholic
syncretism. The Atitlán lake has a number of villages and
towns on its shores, each one named after a Christian Apostles.
Lake
Atitlán is located at a height of 1562 meters a.s.l (5124
feet a.s.l.) surrounded by four volcanoes Santa Calra, San Pedro,
San Lucas and Santiago; the highest of these is 3537 meters (11604
feet).
